Eight police officers, a chief and two residents were killed in an ambush by bandits while in pursuit of criminals who raided a village in Turkana East and walked away with unknown number of livestock.
The bandits are suspected to have come from neighbouring West Pokot County.
Confirming the incident, the National Police Service said it had dispatched more police officers to reinforce those on the ground in beefing up security, pursuing the bandits and ensuring normalcy resumes.
“A local chief, two members of the public and eight police officers succumbed to injuries following an ambush by cattle rustlers,” NPS shared.
NPS has further assured the public that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure sanity and safety in the region.
“NPS condoles with the bereaved families of the departed officers and members of the public”.
Among the fatalities is Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot’s sister.
“Kindly fix the insecurity (menace) in Turkana East,” Mr Aukot appealed to President William Ruto.
