A Joint Security Operation Command Centre (JOCC) has been established in Isiolo to handle electoral violence and other security threats in the region.

The centre will receive early warnings from the residents through a toll free call line and promptly respond to issues of public concern for peaceful coexistence among the communities living in the county.

The centre, which is at Isiolo Police Station, also has a women situation room to address Gender Based Violence among women.

Isiolo Sub-county Deputy Police Commander Felix Muli who is in charge of the centre urged the residents to make use of the establishment to report issues that threaten security and assured that all information received via the toll line will be treated with confidentiality.

“Let them report all electoral violence cases without any fear,” said Mr Muli.

The officer assured that all information received will be promptly acted upon and urged the locals to embrace peace during the electioneering period.

Isiolo Peace Link’ Abdia Mohammud said the centre was a great milestone towards achieving a peaceful society before, during and even after the August polls.

“The women desk will handle issues affecting women through timely interventions,” said Ms Mohammud while asking residents to utilize the centre.

The toll free number is 0800721519.

The centre has been established by the National Police Service in partnership with Isiolo Peace Link, United Nations Peace Building, REINVENT, Isiolo Indigenous Women, UNJCR 1325 Action Group, Kenya Red Cross, Northern Rangelands Trust, Program for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa, Seed and Social Ministry Research Network Centre among others.

Isiolo is among more than 20 counties that the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) recently put on alert over possible electoral violence in the August polls even though security agencies maintain that there is no cause of alarm.
