A section of MPs allied to Deputy President William Ruto have appealed to the government to lift the curfew ban on conducting business at night to help revive the economy to its initial state.
Led by former Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen, the MPs claimed that the restrictions continues to affect the common citizens while few rich individuals continue to benefit from the measures put in place to curb the spread of Coronavirus.
“It is unfortunate that while other countries have reopened their economy, ours is still locked making us dependent on unreasonable external borrowing,” the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator said.
Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri accused the government of failing to cushion several companies in the transport and hospitality industry that have been adversely affected by the curfew orders forcing them to lay off several employees and reduce their operations.
The call comes when the country is still battling the virus that has claimed 5, 224 lives across the country, according to the Ministry of Health.
More than 250, 000 have contracted the disease with several cases suspected not to have been reported due to inadequate testing capacity.
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday hinted on a likelihood of lifting the restrictions in the near future.
