The government has sent a warning to officials suspected to be diverting relief food meant for drought-hit counties to the market saying that anyone found culpable will face the law.
Newly-appointed Special Programs PS Nelson Marwa said some of those tasked with delivering food and non-food items to residents affected by the droughts were not performing their duties diligently revealing that only half of government relief food was reaching the intended beneficiaries.
PS Marwa said some of those involved were repackaging the food items for sale instead of delivering to the intended beneficiaries.
“We have jokers on the grounds who are diverting the food for their own benefits,” Marwa said.
He maintained that the government was keen on ensuring that the relief food benefits the targeted people maintaining that if supplied as directed, it would alleviate suffering to over two million Kenyans who are in dire need of food assistance.
“Whoever found culpable should be ready to carry their own cross,” the PS warned.
The government has set aside Sh2 billion to deal with the ongoing drought that was recently declared a national disaster by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
