Parents, teachers and students, who have been eagerly waiting for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results will wait longer as teachers marking the exams downed their tools early this week demanding increased pay.
Markers based at Moi Girls’ and State House Secondary Schools among other centers in Nairobi have accused the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) for failure to increase their allowances despite working under harsh conditions.
They said that most of them had to incur extra expenses while travelling for the exercise due to the movement restrictions that were introduced by the government to curb the spread of Coronavirus, while also working for long hours to meet the deadline.
Last week, the Ministry of Education announced that the results will be out by May 10 when learners are expected to resume school, an assurance that is likely to be reviewed if an immediate solution to the current stalemate is not provided.
Their normal pay, they said, was to be reduced by half from the Sh20, 000 they had earlier been promised to Sh10, 000.
The boycott has stalled marking of English Paper III that was expected to be completed by May 4 (yesterday).
