Isiolo Woman Representative Rehema Jaldesa has demanded speedy investigations into the officers who mistreated her and a group of residents who had accompanied her at the Referral hospital.
The legislator who had stopped to address casuals protesting over little and delayed payment had been ordered by police officers to address the workers from outside the facility.
On refusal, a contingent of officers started firing in the air while others throwing teargas canisters towards her vehicle and journalists who were covering the event.
Ms Jaldesa said it was unfortunate that families of the injured men and those taking their kin to the hospital and residents who were not protesting were teargassed during the incident.
“Mistreating people who have lost their loved ones and others suffering in the wards was impunity of the highest level ,” Ms Jaldesa told The Press Point.
She termed the act as inhumane saying she had gone to comfort the patients who had been injured during the Thursday’s banditry attack.
The casuals, she said, had also done nothing wrong as they were exercising their constitutional rights of airing out their grievances to a leader they elected to represent them.
“The Constitution allows citizens to exercise their democratic rights through all available avenues,” she added.
The legislator demanded for clear explanations by County security heads saying that it is unlawful for police officers to be misused.
Residents went to social media to castigate the incident, majority of them saying it was disheartening seeing such activities in a public health facility.
“Teargassing them (casuals) while they aired their grievances on top of not paying them, was adding salt to a wound and is so unfortunate,” Mr Hussein Adan shared on a WhatsApp group.
