The national government is keen on replacing the relief food distribution to vulnerable Kenyans with cash transfer program to help curb pilferage and ensure decency, Public Service CS Margaret Kobia has said.
Speaking during a tour to access the impact of interventions by the government in drought mitigation in Isiolo County, Prof Kobia revealed that from December there will be no more distribution of food items to hungry Kenyans.
The CS said cash transfer programme will curb corruption often witnessed during distribution of food and ensure the targeted needy Kenyans benefit.
“We have had cases of food donated by the government not reaching the beneficiaries in good quality and quantity therefore failing to complete the intended purpose,” she said.
Accompanied by Social Protection Principal Secretary Nelson Marwa, the CS said the State will collect views from Kenyans in bid to ensure efficiency during full rollout of cash transfer program.
“We shall listen to communities on the ground and establish the best way possible to help our people,” Prof Kobia assured.
The cash transfer program will also boost the local economy as the residents will be able to buy food items of their choice locally.
The CS said that beneficiaries with no mobile phones will be assisted to receive aid through national government administration offices.
