Murang’a residents have hailed Esther Mwihaki Kamau of the People’s Empowerment Party for emerging winner in the Gaturi ward by-elections after garnering over 4000 votes.
Ms Mwihaki, who was an employee at Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro’s office, defeated former MCA and Jubilee aspirant Rosemary Wakuthii with over 500 votes in the hotly contested polls and sealed victory in about 20 stations.
The victor’s People Empowerment Party is associated with Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria allied to Deputy President William Ruto’s Tangatanga group.
Ms Mwihaki rode on the party after being defeated by Ms Wakuthii in the Jubilee party primaries.
She vied as independent candidate in 2017 elections and emerged third behind Ms Wakuthii and with late Mr Kiiru Mbembe sealing victory. She had tried her luck with the ruling Jubilee party but lost in the primaries.
Kelvin Maina, aspirant on Party of Economic Democracy, was the first to concede defeat and wished the MCA elect all the best.
“We team Hon Kelvin accept the results and congratulate Hon Esther Kamau for the victory,” one of his supporters wrote on Facebook.
Unconfirmed results show that Ms Mwihaki garnered 4005 votes against Ms Wakuthii’s 3250.
