All schools will resume learning for second term on May 13, the government has announced.
President William Ruto revealed that the decision had been arrived at following advice by the Kenya Meteorological that the heavy rains had subsided.
The Head of State said the government had provided sufficient resources to the MPs through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) for the repair of classrooms and other school infrastructure that had been destroyed by the rains.
“We have made arrangements for the repair of classrooms and other learning facilities across the country ahead of the reopening,” Ruto said during a meeting with leaders from Laikipia and Kajiado counties at State House, Nairobi.
Schools were initially set to reopen on April 29, 2024 but due to the heavy rains that wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, the date was pushed to May 6, 2024.
The president would last Friday direct the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening until it was clear that it was safe for children to resume learning.
The government has since announced that over 200 people had died, 72 reported missing and over 200, 000 households affected by flooding across the country.
