Three Gakuyu primary school pupils including a candidate drowned yesterday while fetching water to wash uniforms from River Kathita in Tharaka Nithi County.
The three aged between 10 and 13 years from Gituma location in Tharaka constituency had travelled for several kilometres in search of water when they met their death.
The deceased, two of them brothers, drowned while trying to cross the river to the other side to wash their uniforms ahead of Monday’s school reopening.
Another pupil they were in company of managed to safely swim to the other side and immediately raised an alarm but by the time help came, the three had already died.
The bodies were moved to Marimanti Level Four hospital mortuary.
Majority of the seasonal rivers in the county have already dried up due to drought forcing residents to trek for longer distances in search of the crucial commodity at the river.
