A middle-aged herder has been jailed for 40 years after an Eldoret court found him guilty of defiling his employer’s seven-year-old girl in Saos village, Uasin Gishu 30 months ago.
The 48-year-old Amos Maiyo committed the offence on February 15, 2020 at the girl’s home and also infected the minor with a Sexually Transmitted Disease.
The girl had been left by the mother sleeping in her bedroom as she rushed to attend to some issues when the man, who had gone to take care of the family livestock, defiled her.
He almost got lynched by furious members of the public but was rescued by police from Ziwa Police station after a local elder reported the incident.
A medical examination at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital showed that the girl had been defiled and infected with STI.
In her testimony in court, the girl’s mother said the daughter, who underwent corrective surgery at the Referral hospital, was tramautised after the ordeal.
The minor also received counseling at the hospital, the court was told.
After pleading not guilty to defilement and indecent act charges, Mr Maiyo claimed he was framed but the court found it as mere afterthought.
Eldoret Principal Magistrate Nancy Barasa said the accused deserved a deterrent sentence for the inhumane act.
“A deterrent sentence will deter him and others like him from committing a similar offence in future,” she said while delivering the judgment.
