The Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti has defended the government against an expose by Citizen TV’s Purity Mwambia “Gun Galore” that revealed how she managed to procure a rifle, police uniform and handcuffs from alleged police officers saying the items belonged to civilians.
The DCI boss, while terming the investigative piece as inaccurate and meant to embarrass the National Police Service, said the journalist only focused on the confessions of criminals but did not allegedly reach the security officials for comment.
He said it was wrong and criminal for the reporter to hold the weapons she got for a long period before handing them over to the police.
“If you tell us you got them from the police, which officer was it, so that we take action. The manner in which the story was aired was sensationalized…” Mr Kinoti said during a briefing.
Mr Kinoti asked RMS Strategy and Innovation Director Linus Kaikai and Editorial Director Joe Ageyo to provide more details on the firearms, saying their letter of surrender lacked the serial numbers which could assist in proving whether they belonged to the service.
