Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji has passed on while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.
The 80-year-old Senator, who was serving his second term, was father to Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji and the Chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative Taskforce.
Mr Haji joined the national administration 60 years ago as a district officer and rose through the ranks to become a provincial commissioner and retired in 1997.
The Senator had been in and out of the hospital and is said to have been flown to Turkey two months ago and flew back last weekend and was admitted at the Agakhan hospital where he passed on Monday morning.
Mr Haji was an Assistant Minister (1998 to 2001) and Minister of Cabinet Affairs in 2002, same where he was nominated in Parliament.
He would five years later be elected Ijara MP on KANU ticket and subsequently served as Minister of Defence during the Mwai Kibaki government from 2008 to 2013.
Janaza prayers will be done at Masjid Noor in South C today evening as burial set to be done at Lang’ata Cemetery.
