Isiolo Senator has appealed to the government to suspend contractor assigned work on the Sh48 million Garbatulla Technical and Vocational Training centre which has stalled.
The Senator termed the contractor as selfish for demanding over 50 percent variation against the 25 percent allowed by law and said should be fired over delayed completion of work.
The government has already paid 90 percent of the funds (Sh42 million) according to officials.
She said a lot of youths in the region were still trapped in drugs, have no jobs and had dropped out of school for lack of fees and that completion of the training centre would enhance employment opportunities through skill development.
“It is sad that the project has stalled because of the selfish contractor who is a conman. The government should take action and assign another contractor for the work to be completed,” Ms Dullo said.
The contractor’s failure to pay workers Sh1.3 million which they are owed has also been blamed for the delay in the completion of the project.
The leader also demanded that casual workers who were working at the site before work stalled be paid their Sh1.3 million pending arrears.
The contractor has been summoned to appear before the Public Works headquarters office in Milimani, Nairobi to shed light on among others the variation.
