A police officer has caused a scare at Marimanti Police Station in Tharaka South Sub-County after escaping with a police vehicle carrying a corpse.

Police constable Meshack Simiyu was intercepted at a police roadblock in Ishiara in Embu County over 100 kilometers from Marimanti Police Station.

The officer who is suspected to be having mental problems according to the report seen by The Press Point, had been saved from a mob that was threatening to beat him up for causing disturbances in the village and taken to Marimanti Police Station in the vehicle that was coming from Kamarandi village to pick the body.

When the vehicle with the body arrived at Marimanti Police Station, the Chiakariga Police Station OCS Mr Kaberia Mbiti and the driver, police constable Daniel Mosonic alighted and that is when Mr Simiyu drove off at a high speed forcing the others to pursue him using private vehicles.

The officer is being detained at Marimanti Police Station as investigations continue while the body has been taken to Marimanti hospital morgue.

No person was injured during the incident and the police vehicle is also intact.

According to the police report, Marimanti Police Station OCS had earlier indicated that the officer who is always drunk could be suffering from mental illness.
