A suspect linked to the gruesome murder of an elderly woman in Kargi location, Loyangalani Sub-County in Marsabit has been arrested.
The 30-year-old man was arrested during an intensified security operation at Manyatta Ngolop aimed at arresting Morans linked to the murder of Margret Esimonte on February 18, 2024 over claims that she was practicing witchcraft.
County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Luka Tumbo said an AK-47 loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the suspect.
The raid, according to Mr Tumbo, was informed by a tip off from members of the public who hinted police on the whereabouts of the suspect.
Police are hunting down other suspected criminals who are currently at large.
While urging members of the public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of other suspects, Mr Tumbo said that surveillance efforts would be sustained to ensure justice is served to the victim’s family.
Ms Esimonte was attacked alongside Ms Sahado Wareheu after a witch doctor accused them of being witches.
A woman is said to have sought the medicine man’s solution for her misfortunes following the death of her husband.
The medicine man, residents shared, allegedly informed her that some unnamed women who he only gave directions to their homes were responsible.
The woman would then task a group of Morans to attack the women and eliminate them for causing her suffering.
Following the attack, Ms Esimonte died while receiving treatment in a nearby health center while Ms Wareheu suffered injuries in different parts of her bodies.
Ms Esimonte is survived by a son, daughter and a 78-year-old husband.
