More than 1000 people and property worth millions has been destroyed by floods in Taita Taveta and neighbouring areas of the Coastal region.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), some 172 homes in Taveta Sub-County were submerged and more than 1500 livestocks swept away by flash floods posing a threat to the locals’ livelihoods.
KRCS Taita Taveta Coordinator Joram Oranga said majority of those affected were forced to seek refuge elsewhere but were still yet to receive aid.
Several counties in the region were hard hit by drought that saw more than 20, 000 residents in dire need of food aid.
The dry-spell also saw increased cases of human-wildlife conflict as elephants from neighboring Tsavo National Park and ranches invaded homes in search of water and pasture.
