A middle-aged man was Friday trampled to death by a marauding jumbo while on the way to Mugumo trading centre in Segera ward, Laikipia County.
The 52-year-old Peter Njoroge was with his two friends when the elephant came from a nearby thicket and charged at them.
The two managed to flee but the deceased was caught up and trampled on by the wild animal dying on the spot.
The elephants in most cases escape from Ole Naishu and Loldaiga wildlife conservancies in search of pasture and mostly wreak havoc on farms, maim and kill people.
Residents called on the Kenya Wildlife Service to erect an electric fence around the conservancies to ensure the animals are confined therein.
They expressed fears that the perennial drought could drive more animals out and prompt more attacks.
