Police in Nairobi are holding a military man and two police officers arrested on Wednesday for carrying out illegal arrests of bodaboda operators at Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
The three, KDF Lance Corporal Ben Shiundu stationed at 15 Kenya Army in Mariakani, Police Corporal Cliff Ombati of Uhuru Camp and Eugine Shivachi, a prison warder stationed at Wajir GK Prison, reportedly allocated themselves patrol duties targeting the riders and demanded bribes from them before releasing their motorbikes.
”Mr Shivachi made a mockery of the multi-agency spirit in fighting crime, by uniting to commit crime instead of complimenting each other’s efforts in guaranteeing the public safety and security of Kenyans,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigation shared on Twitter.
Police reports indicate that the three flagged down Mr Cyrus Mwangi, a bodaboda operator, along City Hall way and demanded Sh4, 000 so they could release his motorbike.
It is then that a passer-by alerted police officers on patrol who on arrival were met by kicks and harassment from the suspects, forcing residents to intervene.
It took combined efforts of the officers on patrol and members of the public to subdue the three errant officers.
The three are currently detained at Central Police Station awaiting arraignment upon completion of investigations.
They will be charged with among others impersonation and being in possession of government stores.
