Five people have died on the spot and four others seriously injured in an accident involving a Sienta and a lorry at the notorious Nithi bridge along Embu-Meru Highway.

Of the five passengers and the driver in the seven-seater public service vehicle, only one occupant survived with severe injuries.

The Sienta vehicle was headed to Chogoria while the truck ferrying milk was heading in the opposite direction when they collided head-on around 8PM.

Villagers and motorists who milled the scene besides helping remove the injured from the wreckage carried packets of milk that were scattered on the road.

Tharaka Nithi County Rescue Team Patron Alex Mugambi said three occupants of the lorry that plunged into the river were seriously injured and rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital.

Eye witnesses say the driver lost control while negotiating the sharp corner at the bridge when he rammed into the oncoming PSV vehicle before rolling into the river.
