Marsabit residents have been encouraged to embrace peace initiatives in solving conflicts and shun retaliatory attacks.
During a disarmament sensitization meeting at St. Stephen ACK Hall in Marsabit town, the Multi-agency security Operations Commander Bernard Mbatha encouraged the locals to report insecurity issues in time so that they are promptly responded to.
The meeting brought together the county’s multi-agency security team led by County Commissioner Paul Rotich and chiefs and their assistants from Laisamis and Loiyangalani Sub-Counties.
Mr Rotich directed the chiefs to hold regular barazas to encourage residents to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms to authorities.
While commending the security teams and local adminstrators for restoring normalcy in the county following spate of past insecurity incidences, Mr Rotich hailed increased patrols and successful recoveries of weapons.
“Peace making is a journey that requires concerted efforts from all,” he said while asking residents to cooperate with police on security matters.
Some 14 rifles, a General Purpose Machine gun and more than 600 rounds of ammunition were last week recovered during the ongoing ‘Rejesha Amani Marsabit’ security operation that seeks to restore peace, security and safety in the region.
The weapons that include three rifles, two AK-47 and G3 rifle handed over to authorities by Bubisa elders, were confiscated between May 10 and May 13 this year.
Mr Mbatha also instructed security teams to firmly address the rising concerns on contraband goods and drug trafficking by arresting and prosecuting culprits involved in the crime.
