A senior police officer who allegedly shot dead a Form Two student at Havards Secondary School five years ago is set to be charged with murder before High Court in Mombasa.

Seargent John Otieno shot dead Tony Katana at Uwanja Mbuzi in Kongowea, Mombasa County on August 12, 2016.

The student’s body was found by relatives lying at the Coast General Hospital mortuary the next day.

Investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) established that the boy died of bullet injuries inflicted during an encounter with police.

“We have forwarded the investigations file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions with recommendations to charge Sgt Otieno with murder,” Ipoa Chair Anne Makori said in press statement dated August 26.
