A mentally challenged woman who hacked her two-year-old daughter with a machete to death has been jailed for three years.

The woman committed the offence in December 2019 and later informed a friend about it.

An autopsy report showed that the two-and-a-half girl died from severe head injuries.

Nyeri High Court Judge Florence Muchemi convicted the suspect, who was in custody since her arrest in 2019, with manslaughter in substitute of murder charge that she was facing (changed through plea-bargaining agreement).

The court on Thursday considered the woman’s mental condition as medical reports earlier submitted in court showed that she had bipolar depressive disorder.

In her judgment, the Judge said the woman was spared from the heavy sentence for murder as was undergoing treatment from 2018 before she committed the offence a year later.
