A renowned blogger will spend the night in a police cell for publishing malicious information regarding a top Kenyan politician.
Edgar Obare was arrested by detectives together with an accomplice Ms Desy Oduor Achieng who was reportedly involved in the plan to extort money from the known vocal governor of one of the counties neighbouring Nairobi.
Information shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation on Twitter shows that the blogger has been coaching young ladies on how to solicit money from prominent people by threatening to share information about them.
On this particular case, it is said that Ms Achieng had been given the governor’s contact to stalk him and later obtain Sh10 million.
Detectives say Obare had instructed Ms Achieng to tell the politician that she was pregnant for him and that she would expose him if he failed to comply.
The lady was to threaten sharing photos of the two if the governor failed to cooperate.
After encountering some hurdles, Obare took to social media accusing the said governor of failing to take responsibility of the lady he had allegedly impregnated and also shared screenshots of the lady’s conversation with the politician.
For fear of being arrested over Obare’s actions, the lady reported the issue to Nyali DCI Offices and the officials later established that she was not pregnant as earlier claimed.`
The lady has since confessed not to have met the governor as earlier purported.
The duo are expected to be charged with publishing false information contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018.
