Five people, among them three children aged one, three and four years, died and eleven others were badly injured after a Matatu they were traveling in crashed near Mtito Andei township.
The 16-seater Nissan Matatu that was heading to Nuu in Kitui from Mombasa rammed into a truck killing the five on the spot during the around 11 am accident.
The public service vehicle was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with the lorry.
The driver and a female passenger also died in the accident according to Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander George Kashmir.
The bodies were moved to Makindu Hospital mortuary.
