Eighteen people died and two were injured after a Matatu they were traveling in was involved in an accident at Mwembeni area in Kwale along Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The driver of the matatu, that eye witnesses say was being driven at high speed, collided head-on with an oncoming truck while trying to overtake.

The Wumeri Shuttle Company Nissan was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi.

Reports indicate that the 18 died on the spot while the injured were rushed to Mariakani Sub-County Hospital.

Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso has appealed to motorists to be vigilant on road to avoid such unfortunate accidents.

He said preliminary investigation showed that the Matatu was overtaking when the 6PM crash occured.

“There is need for outmost care by all road users to prevent such accidents,” he said in a press release sent to newsrooms.

The bodies were moved to Kinago Hospital morgue.
