At least five Nation Media Group (NMG) journalists have in the last two years died in hit-and-run incidences leaving Kenyans wondering whether it was just a mere coincidence.
Last night, former NMG editor Dan Otieno was knocked down by an unknown vehicle along Waiyaki Way as he crossed the road at around 9pm.
The body of Mr Otieno who served in different capacities including as a reporter and editor in Nyeri and Kisumu regional offices was found lying on the road.
Until his demise, the brilliant journalist was serving as Communications Officer for East African Portland Cement Company.
Otieno’s death was confirmed by Kabete police boss, Francis Wahome.
In April this year, renowned linguist, author and veteran journalist, Prof Ken Walibora who worked for decades with the NMG was knocked down by a matatu on Landhies Road in downtown Nairobi.
The body of the journalist who was known for his Swahili prowess was found at the Kenyatta National Hospital where police officers from Kamukunji took it to after the accident.
In March 2020, another staff at NTV Raphael Nzioki was killed by a speeding vehicle as he crossed the road at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street near Nation Centre.
The vehicle also disappeared but was later identified by police in CCTV footage.
In same month, another NMG journalist Christine Omulando who subbed The East African editor, was also killed by a speeding vehicle at around Khoja Mosque roundabout in the city.
Last year in September 2019, former NMG news editor Anthony Kariuki was killed in a road accident along Outer Ring Road in Nairobi as he was crossing it on his way to his Buru Buru Estate home.
The incidences have left NGM journalists in the Twin Tower and those on the regional offices mouths open wondering what exactly is going on.
Some of the NGM journalists could be heard on Tuesday suggesting that the media house which is the biggest in East and Central Africa needed prayers to break the trend.
Kenyans have also been left with their tongues wagging wondering why the continued misfortunes at NMG with some claiming they could be planned killings.
