A woman who was in the matatu that ran over an explosive device along Arabia-Mandera road has succumbed while her three-year-old daughter continues to nurse gunshot wounds at the county’s referral facility.

The girl, according to Sub-County Director of Health Services Abdi Maalim was admitted with fractured legs.

Seven people died and 13 badly injured following the attack which police sources suspect was planned by Al-Shabaab militants.

According to the survivors, there were two other vehicles ahead of their matatu that seemingly noticed the explosive that had been placed strategically on the tarmac as the drivers kept evading some points.

After the explosion, police say, the matatu was attacked by about six armed men who sprayed it with bullets.

Five bodies were collected at the scene while two other people succumbed while being taken to the hospital.
