Tharaka Member of Parliament Gitonga Murugara has won ‘The Covid-19 Epoch-King of Fake News’ title.
Armed with a phony document downloaded from an illusory blog, the legislator full of thirst for cheap publicity took by horns Governor Muthomi Njuki’s government accusing it of neglecting his constituency in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.
The sham list that was legislator’s reference document indicated that out of the 12 proposed Covid-19 isolation centres that are expected to be established in institutions, Chuka/Igambang’ombe constituency where Njuki comes from had been allocated nine, Maara constituency three and Tharaka constituency none.
Having landed a golden chance to redeem his bongapoints, the MP took no time to confirm the authenticity of the report that depicted Njuki as hater of Tharaka community.
Murugara demanded answers from the governor as to why ‘his’ people had been neglected only for the authentic document from the office of County Commissioner to be presented to the mainstream media.
Disappointed with the MP’s character of peddling fake news, County Health executive Dr Nthuraku M’ Riara dismissed the legislator as ‘King of Fake News’ and lord of tribalism.
Offended by the MPs behavior, JM Njagi, a constituent posted on WhatsApp, “It’s unfortunate that an elected MP can take advantage of the big gap between public perception and empirical reality just to score cheap publicity,”
He added that, “Its uncalled for, that the MP would want to move Tharaka to a post factual society where evidence and truth no longer matter and where lies have an equal status to the clarity of evidence,”.
