Isiolo county government has rolled out a two-week verification of weighing and measuring machines used for trade in an effort to enhance consumer protection and fair business practices.
The exercise seeks to ensure that all weighing machines used by traders are of the recommended standard and neither the consumer nor the trader is exploited.
Speaking during the launch of the exercise in Isiolo town, County Trade Chief Officer Lucy Kaburu said they were targeting general traders, supermarkets, petrol stations, markets and butcheries among other businesses across the county and called for cooperation.
Any trader found using sub-standard or faulty machines will be required to pay some fees for repair work and stamping by the Weights and Measures office.
“The exercise seeks to ensure that traders do not exploit their customers by under weighing their products while also protecting them from making losses through overweighing,” Ms Kaburu said.
County Tourism and Trade Executive Ms Halima Abgudo said the department was committed to protecting traders and clients as inaccurate measuring scales were causing either the consumer or trader to incur losses.
“Both the consumer and the trader must see value for their money during business so it is important for one to ensure the machines they are using are accurate,” Ms Abgudo said after launching the exercise in Isiolo town on Friday.
