Traders at Ndagani market near Chuka University in Tharaka Nithi County have cried foul over uncollected garbage that has been piling up for the last three days.
Speaking to the Press Point, the traders said the garbage was likely of posing danger to their health calling for emptying of the two bins at the market.
The waste is supposed to be collected at regular intervals by the county government’s trucks for disposal at Chuka town dumpsite near Chuka police station and where the government recently installed an incinerator.
The Press Point observed that the bins at the market were full of garbage that is scattered close to nearby shops some metres to PCEA church.
A fruit vendor Charles Kirimi complained that customers were no longer visiting his kiosk due to the bad smell emanating from the uncollected garbage.
“I have lost quite a number of customers due to the bad odour from the garbage,” Mr Kirimi said calling on the county officials in the waste management department to ensure that garbage is collected on time.
Sarah Gatakaa, a shop keeper said they fear contracting diseases such as Cholera and asked the county to come up with an effective routine collection of waste for a cleaner environment.
The Press Point noted that area residents were considering throwing trash on the heaps outside the bins.
The traders have threatened to boycott paying levies if the litter is not collected in time.
“Sometimes the litter compiles for a whole week and the environment becomes pathetic,” Reuben Gitari said.
