Isiolo parents have been asked to allow their children study from the Isiolo town library and interact with a number of resources there to better their performance in the examinations.
Education stakeholders lamented that few learners were using the facility despite availability of resources that could help boost the county’s performance in national examinations.
Isiolo Senior Assistant County Commissioner Ms Anabel Gitonga, while receiving books worth Sh300, 000 donated to the library by Desai Memorial Foundation, urged teachers at public schools to liaise with the facility’s management and make arrangements on when their pupils can access the library.
Accompanying Isiolo County Director of Education Hussein Koriyow, Ms Gitonga, who represented Isiolo County Commissioner Herman Shambi, said while textbooks, free internet and other useful resources were available at the facility, very few learners were visiting.
“Schools should consult the librarian and arrange on when and how their learners will be accommodated in the library,” Ms Gitonga said adding that parents have a responsibility of instilling a learning culture to their children at a tender age.
Dr Koriyow announced that half of the consignment of books will go to the library and the rest to Korbesa Primary among other schools in the far flung areas to assist the learners in revision for improved performance.
Isiolo Library Board Chair Ismael Galma called for continued sensitization on the facility saying a big number of learners were not aware of its existence.
He said Education CAS Mumina Bonaya and the library board lobbied for the donations.
“We requested for specific books that we thought would address the issues affecting our learners and that is what they donated,” Mr Galma said.
The library board Vice Chairperson Lucy Mworia said many learners who were frequenting the learning facility were from private schools and called upon public schools in the area to follow suit.
She urged parents to be part of the learning activity, by helping their children access services at the facility often.
The librarian in-charge, Mr Ruphus Githinji said the books would help solve inadequacy that has been a challenge to the learners.
“We are grateful for the donations and are confident will ease learning for pupils and students,” said Mr Githinji.
