Four MPs linked to yesterday’s by-election chaos have been asked to immediately surrender their firearms to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for ballistic examination.
This follows a directive by the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to the Firearm Licensing Board to suspend the politicians’ licenses for misusing their firearms.
While the IG did not mention the names, it is believed the politicians are Nandi Senator Samson Cheragei, MPs Didmus Barasa of Kimilili, Wilson Kogo of Chesumei and Nelson Koech of Belgut who were arrested yesterday morning after police blocked their convoy coming from Pangola Primary School which served as a polling station.
Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala’s bodyguard was also arrested for shooting a resident.
Police bosses in the respective areas where chaos were witnessed have been directed to arraign the leaders who were arrested yesterday.
The IG decried continued misconduct by politicians during the mini-polls and warned of stern action against leaders perpetrating violence.
“We will not tolerate such misconduct,” the IG said in a press release signed by Charles Wahong’o shared on Twitter.
The IG ordered Former Sports CS Rashid Echesa who slapped an election official at Bulonga polling post to surrender himself at the nearest police station or risk being treated as armed and dangerous person.
