Nearly 4000 police officers across the country are under investigation over alleged misconduct, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed.
IPOA Deputy Director for Inspection, Monitoring and Preventive Services, Munene Mugambi said already 47 officers had been convicted on grievous offences and that investigations were ongoing.
The official said that the ongoing investigations covered a wide range of issues including excessive use of force by the police, extrajudicial killings, serious injuries, sexual offences among other human rights violations allegedly perpetrated by police officers.
“Already 3988 officers are under our radar over different forms of violations. Investigating issues concerning security officers is time consuming and therefore require a lot of patience,” he said while responding to criticism on alleged slow pace of investigations.
He added that inadequate resources had posed a major setback and that the authority was continuously engaging the National Assembly for support to ensure justice is realised for individuals affected by police brutality.
The police continue to face public backlash over misconduct including use of excess force to unarmed residents in public places including churches.
