The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has called for enhanced partnerships in the fight against discrimination and gender-based violence (GBV) in Isiolo County.
NGEC Chairperson Rehema Jaldesa said while advocacy efforts had made significant progress, there was more to be done to end violence against the vulnerable populations.
She emphasized the need for concerted action by all stakeholders to protect vulnerable and marginalized groups, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
“The fight for equality is not a one-person job. It requires every one of us to play our part. By doing so, we would achieve a more friendly society where everyone’s rights are upheld,” said Jaldesa.
The official called on communities not to fear but report all cases related to GBV to ensure victims access justice and perpetrators are held accountable.
Jaldesa praised chiefs for their critical role in identifying and supporting victims of GBV at the grassroots level report the incidents for legal action.
Isiolo Deputy Governor Dr. James Lowasa who was accompanied by County Secretary Dade Boru said in partnership with the Gender Technical Working Group, the county had made significant strides in tackling rising cases of defilement and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
He reiterated the government’s commitment in collaboration with other partners to establish a rescue center that would aid the push for gender equality.
“In partnership with the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, we are establishing a rescue center at the Referral Hospital to ensure survivors can access proper guidance and help,” he said.
Deputy County Secretary in charge of partnerships and NGOs coordination Mohammed Boru raised concern over the disintegration of families and rising cases of young divorces, which he said are fueling violence and discrimination.
“Families are no longer cohesive. We must restore social support systems if we are to win this fight,” said Boru.
County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding noted that although the vastness of Isiolo hinders access to justice, community champions, local administrators, and the media were helping bridge the gap.
“We appreciate the effort by grassroots champions and the media who have been key in supporting survivors access to justice,” he said.
The commission will in the next three days hold undertake several engagements in Isiolo aimed at pushing for equality, promoting inclusivity, and strengthening response mechanisms against GBV.
